SOCIOLOGY
The Course
The AS/A Level specification provides:
An AS Qualification, following the successful completion of 3 modules
which offers a lively and interesting introduction to sociology as well
as a sound progression onto the full A level, which is awarded following
the successful completion of a further 3 modules.
A flexible assessment pattern including optional coursework in the form
of social research.
A range of interesting topics including Family, Media, Religion, Crime and
Education, with a strong emphasis on contemporary issues
relating to these topics.
There are 3 main subject core themes interwoven throughout the
substantive topics. These are:
The different theoretical approaches adopted by
sociologists towards their subject matter, including issues of social
order, social control and social change.
Issues concerning the nature of culture, identity and socialisation.
Issues concerning social differentiation, power and stratification of
societies.
(The last two themes relate in particular to class, age,
ethnicity and gender).
- Students learn how to conduct social research (the theoretical,
practical and ethical implications of a range of methods) and to explore
the links between the self and society. The course involves the
examination of social trends, the implementation of social policies and
how they impact on individual experience.
