This course will suit students who enjoyed their
GCSE English course, are enthusiastic readers, and like discussing and
arguing about literature.
The department follows the AQA Specification A
syllabus for AS and A2.
This syllabus aims to achieve the following:
1. To develop informed, independent and
reflective readers of a range of texts.
2. To encourage careful and close reading of text, considering and
understanding other readers' interpretations.
3. To research and develop awareness of the contexts of reaing and
writing.
4 To enable you to pursue your own interests in more depth and detail.
5. To offer a student-friendly course with a coursework element in each
year.

- Unit 1 The Modern Novel
Unit 2 Shakespeare Coursework
Unit 3 Texts In Context: one poetry; one drama

Assessment will be by two examinations and one
coursework piece.
Advanced Level
- Unit 4 Texts In Time: one pre-1900 poetry; one
pre-1770 drama
Unit 5 Literary Connections Coursework
Your own choice of at least
two texts for individual study, one being prose.
Unit 6 Reading For Meaning
The representation of World
War I in Literature.
