  AS/A-Level Physics at Elliott

These courses offer deep insight into the behaviour of all physical bodies, from inside the nucleus to the edge of the Universe! We discuss key practical discoveries that have played a major role in the development of human kind. Although this may sound daunting the ultimate goal is actually to reveal an underlying simplicity. Gaps in current knowledge are highlighted, thus revealing the new fundamental questions that still need to be answered.

Physics 'A' and 'AS' level complement the other Science courses. Physics is useful to those who are interested in following a career in Engineering, Medicine or the Sciences. Many Universities today offer a large variety of "Physics with" courses where Physics is studied alongside other subjects, such as Music, Languages, Philosophy and Business Studies - to name but a few!

The Course

Students will be required to solve both written and practical problems, working individually and in groups. Past paper exam questions are used throughout the course and extension work is often available. The group will be tested periodically, hence setting achievable short term goals which we see as necessary in a demanding course such as Physics.

The syllabus covers most of Classical Physics: Mechanics and material properties along with the more modern Quantum Physics and Fields.

The AS course is a good general introduction to Physics. The topics covered include Mechanics, Radioactivity, Electricity and Thermal Physics and students get a chance to encounter Nuclear and Particle Physics The AS course also includes a practical exam at the end of the year, giving students an opportunity to shine in the new skill areas they have gained.

The A2 course builds on the AS to further develop skills and knowledge. Topics covered include Waves and The Universe, Quantum Physics, Fields and Forces, as well as a second, more involved practical exam.

In addition to this there is a Synoptic unit, which draws together knowledge, understanding and skills that have been gained throughout the course. Many students find this the most exciting part of KS5 Physics.

Achieving a good grade in A level Physics is a demanding but satisfying task. Students need to be organised, motivated and open to having preconceptions challenged. Maths skills will need to be good, but they will develop over the two years. We will expect you to take control of your learning as with any course in the Sixth Form at Elliott.
