Meals

Before school and at break, a variety of food and drink is on sale. A cafeteria provides lunch. Students may bring packed lunches to school. Free dinners are available to children of parents who are in receipt of Income Support. Only Sixth Form students are allowed to go home for lunch.

Sex Education

This is carried out within the Health Education programme and across the years according to the needs and maturity of students. It is taught within the context of the school’s sex education policy which was drawn up by governors as required by recent legislation.

Special Educational Needs

Students with Special Educational Needs are identified through a screening programme and information from the Primary School. The support provided will vary depending on the needs of the pupil. Students who have statements of special educational need are fully integrated into the curriculum. They are supported by an individual support teacher or classroom assistant.

Clothing and equipment

Elliott has introduced a new school uniform and all students are expected to wear it. There is an Elliott kit for P.E. and games.

Text books are loaned to students. Exercise books and other stationery will be provided by the school. If damaged or lost, parents will be expected to pay for their replacement.

Students will need a strong weatherproof bag to carry equipment to and from school. Whilst every effort is made to safeguard personal possessions, the school cannot accept liability for personal property lost or damaged in school.

We advise parents to ensure that their own household effects policy covers such losses. School clothing and equipment should be clearly and indelibly marked.

Charging Policy

The 1988 Education Act had important implications for school journeys and introduced new concepts. As a consequence the school asks parents for a voluntary contribution to cover costs other than board and lodging for journeys which take place during school time. For journeys which are optional extras and take place during the holidays or weekends the school may charge for all the costs. For field trips which are related to examination work, only the costs of board and lodging may be charged. Grants are available to cover the costs of those who are not able to pay.

A termly charge is made for instrumental music lessons and for the loan of instruments. A bursary of 50% of the fee for attendance at the Centre for Young Musicians is available for those meeting entry requirements. The Head has discretion to remit all or part of these charges.

Disciplinary procedures

Elliott has a clear policy for Behaviour for learning, which ensures a calm environment where students can feel safe and promotes self discipline and respect for others. For some offences it may be necessary to detain a pupil after school. If this is likely to last more than 10 minutes, at least 24 hours’ notice will be given. Sometimes a student who has been giving difficulties is put “on report”.

The Headteacher has the power to exclude students in cases of severe misconduct. Such action will be reported to the Chair of Governors and the Local Education Authority, in the case of permanent exclusion.

Documents

All documents relating to the Education Acts, exam syllabi, school policy statements,Inspectors’reports etc. are available at the school for parents to see by arrangement with the school’s Senior Administrative Officer. Many can be found on our website.

Complaints

Complaints may be made directly to the Head or Chair of Governors at the school.

Current Criteria for Admission arrangements

Specialist Places:

Up to 21 places will be allocated on the basis of an aptitude for Modern Foreign Languages. Places will be offered after written and oral assessment of aptitude.

Applicants will need to complete a supplementary application form if they wish to be considered for a specialist place. Those not offered a specialist place will automatically be considered for a place under the general admissions criteria.

General Places:

189 places (or more in the event of fewer than 21 specialist places being allocated), will be allocated as follows:

In order to admit students across the whole ability range, all applicants will be placed in ability groups A – E (where A = top 20%, B = next 20% and so on) according to their scores in the Wandsworth year 6 Test. Where applications for admission exceed the number of places available, the following admission a criteria will then be applied to each of these ability group and places offered and waiting lists drawn up accordingly.

               I.      Where the child has a sibling currently attending the school. (Parents with siblings at Elliott must submit an application for a place by the closing date given on the application form)

II.      Children with known special medical or social needs, including Looked After Children, which, in the opinion of the Governing Body, would be suitably provided for in the school.

III.      Proximity of the child’s home to the school measured  by the shortest walking route with street lighting as measured by the Council’s Geographical Information System, with those living nearest being given the highest priority.

Application forms and further details about the admission arrangements are available direct from the school..
