Content and
Language Integrated Learning (CLIL)
Elliott School has developed the concept of
Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) within the context of
Geography.
Students from Years 6 up to 9 are currently
studying French within the context of Geography. This work won the
Languages Department a European Award for Languages in 2004.
What are the
benefits of CLIL?
Although it may take a while for pupils to acclimatise to the challenges
of CLIL, once they are familiar with the new way of working,
demonstrably increased motivation and focus makes it possible (and
likely) that they will progress at faster-than-usual rates in the
content subject. CLIL aims to improve performance in both the content
subject and the foreign language. Research indicates there are no
detrimental effects for the CLIL pupils (and often progress is
demonstrably better).
Further information on the CLIL approach to
language teaching can be found at the following website:

You can down load examples of resources
used at Elliott School in order to see how we go about combining the
teaching of Geography and French. (You will need Adobe Acrobat to read
the files)
