Chemistry is a
crucially important subject. It provides the basis for our most
important industries and as an A level subject it is essential
for further studies in the Sciences or Medicine. A level
Chemistry complements many other A level subjects, such as
Biology, Mathematics, Physics and Geography.
The Edexcel AS and A2 Chemistry
specifications aim to:
o stimulate interest in and enjoyment of the subject
o recognise the value of Chemistry to society
o gain a thorough knowledge and understanding of Chemistry
o develop practical skills
o lay a secure foundation for students who will continue their studies.

Entry Requirements
-
1)Students should enter the course with BB at GCSE Science
2)Must be mathematically confident with C minimum at GCSE.
The Course
The course consists of six units:
AS Level
Unit 1 Structure, bonding and main group chemistry
Unit 2 Introductory organic chemistry, energetics, kinetics and equilibria
Unit 3 Laboratory chemistry I
A2 Level
Unit 4 Periodicity, quantitative equilibria and functional group chemistry
Unit 5 Transition metals, quantitative kinetics and applied organic
chemistry
Unit 6 Laboratory chemistry II
Assessment
Both AS and A2 levels are assessed using three written papers. Year 12 AS
chemists take a practical exam of one hour and 45 minutes in the May of
year 12. Year 13 A2 chemists undertake around 10 pieces of assessed
coursework throughout the year.
