KS4 Modern Foreign Languages at Elliott

The Course

During the course students aim to develop their ability to use target languages effectively for the purpose of spoken and written practical communication.

The GCSE stresses the use of the foreign language in authentic situations and students are expected to understand both spoken and written sources (for example: radio announcements, signs, notices, newspaper articles, letters from pen friends).

The course is taught in topic areas and the four language skills, speaking, listening comprehension, reading comprehension and writing are assessed at regular intervals at Foundation and Higher levels. The topics include introducing yourself, talking about where you live, your school, your leisure activities and your future plans as well as holidays, shopping, travel, health and food.

Assessment

Each topic forms one unit of work and at the end of each unit work is evaluated. Students complete a minimum of three pieces of coursework and at the end of the course are entered for an examination in each of the three language skills. Each skill is divided into a Foundation and a Higher examination.

Each skill area accounts for 25% of the final grade.
