English at Elliott

This successful department is made up of an established team of teachers who offer interesting and effective lessons and thus achieve strong results across Key Stages 3 to 5. The department is located around the upper foyer (the first floor of the school) opposite the library.

Some recent initiatives
•    The English department has embraced the positive opportunities the KS3 Literacy Strategy offered: we have revised and rewritten the KS3 schemes of work to fit the four part lesson structure and objective led approach; the NLS has also provided an opportunity to reflect on and improve practice, and we have embraced various new teaching strategies, including small student white boards, modelling and the recent acquisition of interactive white boards.

•    In harmony with the whole school emphasis we are working on our target setting and data monitoring systems for all students.

•    At KS5 we have reintroduced a broader curriculum offer for A2 coursework, where students produce essays on books of their choice (with some sort of status in terms of the literary canon); students also receive individual mentors (from the English Department) who assist them in planning and producing the essays through a series of individual meetings.
