GOOD NEWS!
ELLIOTT’S A LEVEL RESULTS TOP WANDSWORTH
VALUE-ADDED LEAGUE TABLES!
We are delighted to announce that in 2008-9
Elliott A level students made more progress than
students in any other Wandsworth School or Sixth
Form College.
At 1039.9, Elliott scored the most
highly –
even higher than local private schools and Sixth
Form colleges.
Congratulations to all the students who did so
well – and, of course, to their teachers who
inspired them and worked so hard to get them
such excellent results.
Parla italiano?
Starting on Tuesday 2nd February 2010 we will be
offering our students an after school Italian
course, the Certificate in Business Language
Competence (CBLC). The CBLC course was developed
to meet the needs of business. It is a valid and
sought-after qualification in the world of
business.
The CBLC Entry Level course is for beginners in
the language and will provide a good basic
knowledge of Italian and leads to a CBLC
qualification. It is suitable for complete
beginners or those with a very limited knowledge
of Italian. The main emphasis will be on
understanding and speaking the language, but
some time will be spent on reading, e.g. signs
and notices and on simple writing tasks. The aim
is to enable students to communicate in simple
terms in practical situations when visiting the
country, e.g. ordering meals, using public
transport, shopping etc.
The course will be open to all students and will
take place in room 102 from 3.15 – 4.15 each
Tuesday. Please come and see Mrs Jones in the
Languages office to reserve your place on the
course.
OUR
LANGUAGES
The languages
department are seeking to enter bilingual
students for public examinations (GCSE or A
Level) this summer. If you are fully competent
in another language that is not currently taught
at Elliott (eg Urdu, Portuguese, Italian etc).
Please come and see
Mrs Jones in the Languages office as soon as
possible to register your interest and to obtain
sample papers in your chosen language.
Please note all entries must be made by
Wednesday 3rd February 2010 for GCSE and 3rd
March for A Level.
On Friday 4th
December, four local and enthusiastic Secondary
schools battled out an epic Year 7 & 8
Basketball tournament at the Battersea Sports
Centre. The tournament, hosted by Wandsworth
School Sports Partnership and coordinated by
School Sports Coordinator Ashley Montgomery,
pitted each school against each other in a round
robin format.
Going into the final match of the night,
Southfields and Elliott had both won their
matches against Salesian College and Graveney
respectively, with Graveney recording their only
win against Salesian College in what turned out
to be a third and fourth playoff in the second
last match of the night. Elliott started the
match very brightly and ran out to an early
lead, with Southfields looking tired from
previous matches. Although a time-out pep talk
with 5 minutes remaining appeared to bring
Southfields back to life, they were unable to
overcome the early deficit and Elliott held on
to take out the competition.
On Friday 6th of November the
author of the award-winning series of books,
‘The way of the Warrior’, visited Elliott
School.
He is a black belt in many forms of martial
arts and as well as being an author.
His presentation consisted of book readings,
sword shows and videos of wondrous things
from his trips to Japan among other things.
His name is Chris Bradford and you should
look out for his books because we all had a
great time of listening about him and his
stories.

REMEMBRANCE CEREMONY AT ELLIOTT
In preparing Elliott students for
Remembrance Sunday two ceremonies were held on
Monday (01/11) and Tuesday (02/11) when wreaths
were laid at Elliott War Memorial by
Elliott students and our head teacher Mrs
Peacock.
John Dodwell school archivist and
former head of History, returned to lay a wreath
on behalf of the Old Elliottonians.
The ceremony was conducted by Mr
Tucker, the address given by Mrs Peacock who
referred to her own grandfather’s death at
Ypres.
Sixth Former, Tom Blanchard blew
the Last Post.
This term, there have been two geography
fieldtrips to the North Norfolk coast. Students
studied a range of coastal processes on the
coast and sought to find out whether the town of
Sheringham was worth saving from the sea.
There was much research
and debate and walking to be done. We were very
lucky with the weather and all students were
commended on being fantastic representatives for the
school.
All in all it was an
enjoyable worthwhile experience.
Now, the hard work begins. All students must aim to
complete their coursework by the 14th December. As
well as lesson time, students must be working on
this at home. There is also After School support for
students on Thursdays and at lunch times.
Some guidance can also be found on the school
website.
If all students aim to
gain a grade above their minimum target in
coursework (25% of their exam)
then this will give them a huge head start before
the exam. We thank you, in advance, for your
support.

EUROPEAN DAY OF
LANGUAGES 2009
On Friday 25th September
Elliott held its annual European Day of Languages event.
As in previous years it
was a great success with participating
schools – Granard Primary, Burntwood, Cator Park,Chestnut
Grove, Ernest Bevin, Southfields Community School
and St
Cecilias. Year 7
students from Elliott also took part and some of our
linguist Sixth Formers led some of the sessions.
In the course of the event
students had the opportunity to get a first taste of
Chinese, Japanese, Portuguese, German, French and
Catalan.
On the left are some of the
photographs from the event:
