v     Preparing for our Buildings for the Future programme due to begin in September 2009

v     Continuing to improve Standards of Achievement for all students

A Summary of our 2007 results

SATs

v     Year 9 produced the best ever Science results with 69% of our students achieving level 5+ and above

v     Our Mathematics results have gone from strength to strength with 71% of students achieving level 6+ and 46 students achieving level 6 and above

v     The English department’s level 5 and above score has risen by 7% from last year

v     These results provide our Year 9 students who have moved into Key Stage 4, with an excellent foundation for their GCSE courses. Well done.

GCSEs

v     Our GCSE results are the best yet in the school’s history surpassing our target

v     52% of our students achieved 5+ A*-C, an 8% increase from last year’s result

v     Our 5+ A*-C scores, including English and Maths were 43% which again surpasses our targets and places us in the top 25% of similar schools. Many of our students will be returning to our Sixth Form.

‘A’ Levels

v     The Sixth Form has continued to go from strength to strength achieving the following results:

o       A - E Grades 96%

o       A - C Grades 74%

o       A/B Grades 51%

v     These results have allowed the majority of our Sixth formers to secure places at top universities. 3 students have also achieved places at Oxford and Cambridge which is a major achievement.

Our success this year has all been due to the hard work and commitment of our students and the positive partnership which exists between home and school. Thank you for your support.

It is clear from these results that Elliott is living out its school motto -  ‘We Aspire to Excellence’.

ELLIOTT SUCCESS
An extract from a letter to our Chair of Governors from Councillor Kathy Tracey, Cabinet Member, Children & Young People's Services, Wandsworth:

Dear Mr Clark

AWARDS CEREMONY - ELLIOTT SCHOOL

A report was presented at the Overview and Scrutiny Committee meeting on 4 March 2008 by the Director of Children and Young People's Services on schools^ which had achieved outstanding results in the end of Key Stage National Curriculum tests.

We would particularly wish to commend the fact that the school:

  • was the most improved school at Key Stage 3 since 2006

  • was the school whose results improved most between 2006 and 2007 in terms of Level 2 (5 or more passes at GCSE at grades A*-C)

I would like to congratulate you all, staff, pupils, governors and parents on this achievement. I would be delighted if you would be able to attend a presentation ceremony in the Town Hall, Marble Hall Reception, on 20 May 2008 at 4.30 p.m. to receive a certificate on behalf of the school as a mark of your success.

Elliott has just started a  partnership with Ndagani secondary school in Chuka, Kenya, thanks to funding from DFID Global School Partnerships.

DFID Global Partnerships promotes partnerships between schools in the UK and schools in Africa Asia Latin America and the Caribbean. It supports teachers and students from the UK and around the world to learn together about global development issues and to become active global citizens.

The scheme is funded by the Department for International Development (DFID) and delivered by a consortium of the British Council, Cambridge Education Foundation, UK One World Linking Association (UKOWLA) and Voluntary Service Overseas (VSO).

Two of our teachers, Mr Peter Jones and Miss Sinead Gooden, have just returned from visiting the school in Kenya, and teachers from Kenya have also just visited Elliott School.  The visit was to establish a partnership agreement, exchange and share ideas on education, curriculum and teaching and learning.

The two schools are working together on a shared curriculum project on development and environmental issues with a focus on the global dimension and sustainable development.  They are also working on a development plan to raise the achievement of female learners through peer mentoring.

Comments from teachers and students -

Ms Purity Muthone, Head teacher of Ndagani School:

“The students in Elliott School are very active in their learning and this is something we want to develop in our school”.

Mr John Nkari, Maths teacher of Ndagani school:

“We have learnt much from our partner school in terms of learning strategies.  We now need to make sure that this feeds into our curriculum”.

Mr Peter Jones, Head of Geography at Elliott:

“The visits have enabled a strong partnership to be developed where we will jointly develop strategies for learning and the curriculum…this is the beginning of a long and fruitful journey”.

Miss Sinead Gooden, Maths teacher at Elliott:

“I was amazed by the self motivation of students and the value held for education by all, despite very challenging circumstances”.

Student at Ndagani school (after being taught a lesson by Miss Gooden):

“I very much enjoyed the lesson, we were doing something all of the time”

Student at Elliott school:   “I want to visit Kenya!”

Events at Elliott School
The Elliott XL Groups’ Tea Party was a big success, with over 20 elderly people from a local nursing home attending. It was supported by a grant from the Prince’s Trust and held in the library. The visitors enjoyed conversation along with a cup of tea, sandwiches and cakes. We had a raffle with Easter eggs and flowers for prizes and there were several very happy winners. The tables were beautifully decorated with flower arrangements and the event was accompanied with light entertainment from a professional string quartet. We have established links with the events organisers at Ashmead Care Centre and are planning to hold further events.

Oxbridge Success again at Elliott

Four students from Elliott’s unique Sixth Form have won offers to Oxford or Cambridge Universities in the December application process.  Gina Robinson’s offer is to do French at St Hugh’s College, Oxford, Deva Gilroy Sen is to read Maths and Philosophy at Pembroke College and Jamie Saunders Maths at Trinity College Cambridge.  In addition, Pablo Strong won a Choral Scholarship to St. John’s College, Cambridge.

These students join the prestigious list of forty three students in the last thirteen years who have gone to Oxford and Cambridge universities, a fine accolade to the traditions of excellence at Putney’s local comprehensive, Elliott School.
