Fab books win pupils'
Confidence
Burntwood School launched a new book award for
Wandsworth secondary schools at a ceremony this week.
The award, called The Fab Book Award, will allow teenagers to vote
for their favourite books so that they can be recommended to other
students.
School librarians came up with the idea to encourage students to
voice their opinions on which books they thought were the best.
A school spokesman said: The long lists, shortlists and winners of
most of the established children's book awards are decided by
adults. The Fab Book Award has been developed by Wandsworth
secondary school librarians so that students can have more of a say
about which books they want to read and see winning awards."
Pupils and librarians from Graveney, Ernest Bevin, Saint Cecilia's,
Southfields, Ashcroft, Elliott and Battersea Park schools attended
the event last week.

RECENT EVENTS |

On Friday November
6th, Elliott students in Years 7 and 8 were treated to a spectacular
talk and demonstrations in the art, craft and science of Samurai
swordsmanship by
Chris Bradford, author of
The Young Samurai series of books.
In the afternoon
Chris held a writing skills workshop with some of our Gifted and
Talented Year 9 and 10 students.
Look at more photos from
Chris Bradford's visit to Elliott.
"When I heard that
Chris Bradford was to be visiting my school, Elliott, I thought
it would be a
boring author, talking about his book for an hour. I was
wrong.
He made the book
sound exciting; as he was reading it a chapter for us he acted
it out with his Samurai sword. He even talked me into
buying a copy at the end of the day. It’s no wonder it is
an award-winning series. I recommend his books to anyone".
